Inspired by a desire to extend the indoor space out, and by a trip to a tea house in Zanzibar, this full site renovation carries the character of this Shaugnessy gem into a robust and functional outdoor space.
The design brief from the City of New Westminster requested the design for the custom natural materials play structures for Quayside Park, a redeveloped playspace on the Fraser River in downtown New Wesminster. The scheme for this design-build contract with Fricia Construction was inspired by the working riverfront at its doorstep, complete with concrete bridge plinths and piers, a colourful tugboat play structure and slide, and a "log boom" climbing structure. We can't wait for the opening in early 2018!
After a big redesign their house was perfect... except for that deck! This multi-level deck space provides ample options for taking in the views over Burrard Inlet and downtown Vancouver. The upper deck is mom's retreat, while the large main level deck with retractable shade canopy provides almost year-round opportunity for outdoor living. The space under the deck is divided into a secure storage space, and garden shed facing the yard.
This classic modern gem in the Edgemont neighbourhood in North Vancouver has been lovingly restored on the inside but lacked character and definition on the outside. The brief was to design the entry sequence and outdoor spaces to give clarity to the site, work within the character of the architecture and provide a low maintenance and comfortable space for this young family to enjoy.
This stately home in North Vancouver lacked the clear entry experience that it deserved. A layered entry sequence from the street is created through the use of natural stone risers, Ipe wood cladding, porcelain paving and boulder walls. With a focus on year-round interest in the plant material, sliding planes of green, gold, magenta and violet adorn the changing levels leading to the new front walkway. The existing pool was enhanced with new paving and an oversized pergola with retractable awnings for shade and rain protection.
A mucky lawn and desire for a hot tub drove this backyard redesign for a growing family. Updated photos to follow on this glass-covered pergola + patio space. We can't wait to see the planting come back up in the spring!
Our third project with this family is defined by clean lines and a simple palette. A large stone patio in the back provides ample outdoor living space.
Horizontal lines, bamboo and weathering steel custom planters keep things clean and simple in this family patio space.

A complete site redevelopment brings the living space outside in this East Van renovation. Intersecting bluestone patios carved out of lush planting areas define the dining and lounging spaces. A natural stone water feature and white flowering perennials and shrubs keep things crisp and cool in this functional extension of the home.
A family patio in Southlands was in need of an upgrade. The existing paving was badly cracked, a fence needed replacing and a blank linear space was looking to be turned into a series of rooms that these empty-nesters could use to entertain.
